Hospital orientation program
New employees attend a half-day orientation program that covers GRH culture and provides essential staff information. These sessions are helpful for staff to navigate their new work environment.
Health professionals orientation program
New health care professionals are provided with an extended orientation to learn more about our patient care areas such as pain management, wound care, IV therapy, respiratory therapy and documentation.
Compensation and benefits
Grand River Hospital offers its employees competitive compensation and benefit packages which includes a comprehensive medical, dental and insurance plan. Some staff are also eligible to enroll in voluntary life insurance plans.
Employee assistance program (EAP)
Employees and their eligible dependants have access to cost-free, confidential counselling and work life solutions through Shepell-fgi, an external third party provider. This service assists staff in the areas such as:
Quality of work life steering committee (QOWL)
- Crisis/trauma counselling;
- Personal and work-related stress;
- Substance abuse;
- Financial matters; and
- Legal advice.
Since 2008, the hospital’s Quality of Work Life Steering Committee has reviewed, recommended, implemented improvements to, and monitored quality of work life for GRH staff. Gathering staff feedback and suggestions regularly, we ensure staff engagement in improving the work life balance. The QOWL has, and will continue to introduce initiatives to improve the quality of work life for staff.
Award of excellence program
GRH’s monthly award of excellence recognizes individuals who excel in bringing our hospital values to life. These values include professionalism, teamwork, maintaining a positive attitude, respect and communications. All employees and physicians at GRH are eligible to win the award. Any employee, visitor, patient, volunteer or physician can make a nomination. Monthly winners receive:
- A framed certificate;
- A plaque mounted in lobby with their photo and name;
- Designated parking close to entrance of GRH for one month; and
- An invitation to a yearly luncheon with the President and CEO.
Personal and professional growth is a critical element in investing in an organizations future. We offer a variety of educational programs and services through the organizational development team to enable individuals, groups and teams to enhance their skills, knowledge and practices. Education and training are provided through a variety of methods including classroom, online and one-on-one coaching.
The learning management system (LMS)
The hospital’s learning management system (LMS) allows staff to complete e-learning courses, online tests and participate in surveys 24/7. In 2010, our organizational development team was awarded the Workplace Training Award at the Greater Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Commerce’s 2010 Business Excellence Awards for delivering online training needed to promote skills, knowledge and safety in the organization.
Tuition assistance program (TAP)
GRH and the hospital’s Foundation work in partnership to provide tuition support to assist GRH staff in attaining their professional development goals. The tuition assistance program provides eligible full-time and regular part-time employees a portion and/or all of their tuition expenses for qualifying educational courses.
GRH library services
Library services helps staff, affiliated students and volunteers find and effectively use information needed to do their work well. Help with research and improving search skills are some of the services that the library offers to staff.
Videoconferencing at Grand River Hospital
GRH uses videoconferencing technology extensively allowing staff and patients in different locations to interact for either the delivery of patient care, education or administrative purposes. The use of videoconference technology fosters growth and knowledge sharing with a goal of improving patient care services.
The attendance recognition program
Attendance recognition acknowledges the efforts of full-time and regular part-time staff who have achieved perfect attendance over the course of a fiscal year. In 2003, we began to recognize staff members who had perfect attendance for consecutive years. Staff members (excludes management, coordinators, team leads and supervisory staff) with perfect attendance will receive a certificate and a personal keepsake.
Long service awards program
To recognize and appreciate loyal and dedicated service, GRH provides length of service awards to all eligible employees. Eligibility is based on an employees total length of service from date of last hire and upon completion of the following years of continuous service:
The GRH social club
- Five years;
- 10 years;
- 15 years;
- 20 years; and
- 25 years and each five year interval thereafter.
The GRH social club consists of GRH employees who volunteer their time to organize social events for employees and their families. Examples of events include:
- Family fun night;
- Chicopee winter tubing night;
- Free family movie night;
- Shopping trips to the United States; and
- The children’s Christmas party.
For permanent GRH employees, the hospital, in conjunction with the Region of Waterloo provides bus passes to employees at a reduced rate.
The hospital has a retail pharmacy located in the KW Site main lobby where all GRH staff with a valid ID badge will receive an employee discount. It is also a convenient way to fill your prescription while you are at work.
