Grand River Hospital’s integrated stroke unit

Grand River Hospital runs a 12-bed acute stroke unit, committed to supporting the needs of patients admitted with a diagnosis of a stroke.

We are located at Grand River Hospital’s KW Site, 835 King Street West. Our unit is on the fifth floor in the A wing, accessible from the elevators in the main lobby.

Patients admitted to the unit are assessed in the emergency department and admitted based on best practice guidelines for stroke care.

An interdisciplinary team specializing in the care of stroke patients will care for you or your loved one. The team includes internal medical specialists, hospitalists, nurses (registered nurses and registered practical nurses), clinical dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech/language therapists, pharmacists and social workers.

Our clinical team receives support from:
  • On-site community care access centre (CCAC) case managers, who work with us to facilitate a discharge plan as well as co-ordination of care in the community after a patient has left the hospital;
  • Laboratory;
  • Medical imaging;
  • Housekeeping;
  • Dietary; and
  • Infection prevention and control.

Team meetings that include staff involved in a patient’s care are held every day where patient progress is discussed and discharge plans are discussed.

It’s important for everyone to recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke. If you think you, or someone you know is having a stroke, please call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY.
  • Sudden weakness, numbness or tingling
  • Sudden trouble speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden vision problems
  • Sudden severe headache
  • Sudden dizziness or loss of balance

If a person is diagnosed with a stroke caused by a blood clot, then doctors can administer a clot-busting drug available only at a hospital, and only within a few crucial hours after symptoms begin.
