What is a breast diagnostic assessment program (Breast DAP)?The breast DAP (also called the breast assessment clinic) is an innovative program designed to shorten wait times for women within our region with suspected breast cancer. The goal of the breast DAP team is to assess and diagnose breast cancer at the earliest possible phase of the cancer journey, decrease wait times and eliminate many visits to practitioners or health care facilities. Patients can be referred by their family physician because of an abnormal routine mammogram result or other clinical breast concern. The breast DAP is a coordinated approach to assessing and diagnosing women and providing the necessary physical and emotional support while they are going through this process. The breast DAP fosters an environment that supports both women and their families. At the breast DAP most women will see a surgeon, have diagnostic imaging and, if required, a breast biopsy all on the same day.Who is on the support care team? The regional breast DAP team consists of breast surgeons, radiologists, mammography and ultrasound technologists and a patient navigator. Practical and emotional needs of the women and their families are handled by various members of the team. The digital mammography technology available onsite will improve diagnoses and help save more lives. Where is the breast DAP located? Our regional service is located at the Waterloo Wellington Breast Centre, a state-of-the-art facility and the first of its kind in the province, which is located at the Freeport Site of Grand River Hospital, at 3570 King Street East, Kitchener.
How can I access the breast DAP?Physicians must refer their patients for breast assessment services using the referral form. Please contact your physician if you have any breast concerns.
