Welcome to Grand River Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), part of our hospital’s children’s program. We are located on the fourth floor of the hospital’s C wing at the KW Campus at 835 King Street West in Kitchener.

We provide care for approximately 700 babies a year who need close monitoring. These babies may require brief help to breathe, intravenous therapy for medications, hydration and other procedures; and/or care that requires an intensive care setting. We also work closely with providers of other children’s health programs across Ontario.

We believe each baby and family is unique. You are a vital part of the care your baby receives. You provide comfort and support to your newborn, and you are an advocate by helping us plan and make decisions that impact your baby’s care. Your baby knows your voice and is comforted by your presence, touch and scent. We are pleased to support our families to develop parenting skills specific to your baby’s needs. You have the right to ask questions and to be informed of all aspects of your baby’s care.

For families who come to Grand River Hospital from another neonatal intensive care unit:

Transferring from one hospital to another may be stressful. You may see a temporary change in your baby’s feeding pattern, behaviour, or oxygen needs. Although your baby is closer to home, we understand that it may be hard to leave the familiar setting you are used to. You will probably have many questions before you feel comfortable - please ask our NICU staff, they are here to help!
