Types of Support

There are many reasons why you might like support or counselling before, during or after your cancer care.

The Waterloo Wellington Regional Cancer Centre offers support services in many different ways:

  • Individual Support (one-on-one)
  • Peer Support
  • Support Groups
  • Online, Virtual Support (Ontario Telemedicine Network or OTN, video on the computer)
  • Telephone
Individual Support This could be a one-on-one meeting with a health care provider. It might be in person, over the phone, or virtually (on the computer) if you choose. This might be best for you if you have a lot of personal information to share, have specific health needs, or don't like speaking in groups.
Peer Support This type of support is usually between you and another person. Often this other person has shared in a similar experience as you (example: going through cancer treatment).
Support Groups These are groups of people who share common experiences living with cancer. You may find comfort, advice and encouragement. Group size can vary.
Online or Virtual Support Online support is becoming more popular in health care. Virtual care lets your health care team see you in cases where it might not be easy, safe or necessary for you to be seen in person. This if often a more convenient way for patients to go to a cancer care appointment from the comfort of their home. You might be asked to speak with your doctor or supportive care team over "OTN" which stands for the Ontario Telemedicine Network.
Telephone This type of support is given by calling you over the phone. It's a way to easily or quickly connect with you in between in-person or virtual visits.
