Room types and charges

The childbirth program at Grand River Hospital’s KW Campus has three types of patient rooms available:

  • Ward rooms (covered under OHIP);
  • Semi-private rooms - $300 per day (updated July 2022); and
  • Private rooms - $350 per day. (updated July 2022)

If you have questions about room accommodation charges (billing) please call GRH Patient Accounts at 519-749-4300 extension 2352.

Many patients have coverage for semi-private and private rooms through their extended health benefits. Please read carefully to make sure you choose the room you’d like. We've included the form to select your room coverage in the pre-registration package.

  • Please learn your available coverage from your insurance carrier (Example: 100 per cent of the per-day rate, or a lesser amount). The benefit booklet supplied by your employer (or your partner’s employer) may provide this information; or
  • Select ward coverage if you are unsure or can’t confirm your insurance coverage to make sure you’re not unexpectedly billed.

During labour and birth, you’ll have a private birthing room at no charge. After you give birth and until you’re discharged from hospital, you may move to the room of your choice (depending on availability).

Starting one hour after the birth of your baby, you will be charged according to your preferred accommodation (ward, semi-private or private room), even if you remain in your birthing room.

If you are hospitalized during your pregnancy, you will be charged according to your preferred accommodation (ward, semi-private or private room).

Based on your choice, GRH follows rules for billing and payment. It is okay if you change your mind after pre-registration; we will simply need your signature on a new form to indicate your new choice of room accommodation. We will do everything we can to give you your preferred room option.

It is your responsibility to verify your insurance coverage, including any limits. Due to privacy concerns, the hospital is unable to verify insurance coverage and assumes no responsibility to verify any patient's insurance coverage. GRH will bill your insurance company with the information you give, but you are responsible for all charges not covered by your insurance.

If you have no insurance coverage but choose a private or semi room, the hospital will send you a bill for the room charges by mail after you’re discharged. You may also receive a bill for any amount that your insurance won’t pay such as a deductible.

Amenities

Support person accommodations

If you choose a private room after your delivery, one support person (a “care partner”) of your choice may stay with you overnight. Your support person may stay overnight to help you with your baby. There are sleep benches or pull-out beds in our private rooms. Due to space limitations, there are no sleeping accommodations for your support person in our semi-private and standard rooms. They may stay overnight and use a chair.

Television

A television is available at each bedside for a small fee. Information handouts are available on each unit to help you. Your healthcare team may be able to help you find the information you need to purchase television service.

Internet service

GRH offers free guest wireless internet during your stay with us.

Food and drink

Each unit of the Childbirth program has a “pantry”. You will find a small refrigerator and microwave for you to use. If you bring in food or drinks, remember to label containers with your name. You may want to bring a cooler with you to keep snacks and drinks in your birthing room.

GRH also has food options available in our cafeteria. Click here for more details.
